Silver Dollar Casino Review

Silver Dollar Casino:
Silver Dollar Casino was established in 1997, making it a relative old-timer in the still-developing online casino industry. The home page of this casino also attempts to entice new players by promising ' 100% pure casino action '. Unsure as to what exactly this meant, it was with an inquisitive frame of mind that I decided to review this casino.

Part of the English Harbour Group, Silver Dollar Casino operates using Odds On/Vegas Technology software, one of the lesser known software types. While the casino is seen at its best when playing on the download version, a mini version of the casino is available via the Flash browser plug-in, and for those not wanting to download, the casino thoughtfully offers the software on CD which can be ordered from the website.

As the download required is a hefty 11 MB in size, it did take me a while to obtain the software. However, this process was smooth, and before long I had installed the software and had signed up as a new gambler. The new player registration process is also straight forward - a simple bit of form filling being all that is required to join the casino.

After spending a bit of time getting used to the software I headed to the cashier to make a deposit. I deposited a total of $100 via NETeller, although other popular deposit methods are available - such as Credit Cards, UseMyWallet, QuickCash, EcoCard, Click2Pay, myCitadel, Moneybookers. It appears that the Silverdollar casino has done a good job in offering a wide range of deposit options.

As a new player you can get a $110 sign-up bonus on a $100 first deposit - this 110% bonus will be instantly added to your bonus account if your first deposit is above $50. Note that Silver Dollar use a bonus account system. The bonus money can not be cashed out before you have placed bets adding up to minimum 16 X (deposit+bonus). Also there are some game restrictions if you accept the bonus. As always players should read the terms and conditions for the bonus before making their first deposit - the terms and conditions can be found on the casinos "Promotions" page. If you are not interested in receiving the new player sign-up bonus simply make your first deposit below $50. I personally did not accept the bonus as I wanted to be allowed play all the games.

With the $100 sitting in my account, I headed for my favorite game and the most popular of the table games available at a casino - Blackjack. The betting limits at Silver Dollar are reasonable for the low roller, being $2-$200. However, some high bettors may find this higher limit slightly disappointing.

For me though, the $2 betting king, I was perfectly happy and settled down to play some cards. I had not really played at an Odds-on/Vegas Technology casino for a while, so I really didn't know what to expect. However, I have to say that the game play was pretty good. The graphics are above average, and although maybe not quite as good as some competitors, were definitely good enough for me to want to keep playing! The game play was also pretty fast-paced which was again to my liking.

Unfortunately, the dealer appeared not to like me much as my first few hands were not winners. However, things then changed a bit, and after having a few winning rounds and a couple of pushes I settled on a slight loss coming out of the game.

I actually thought that since my luck was not great at Blackjack that I would move to another game where my luck must be better. I chose to play roulette, but after my session at this game was over I would have been very grateful to have stuck to the card table! I chose to use my usual betting strategy of sticking a $1 bet on 17 and then placing 'neighboring' bets on all the surrounding numbers (so 13-21 are covered). The strategy returns either $9 or $36 if my numbers come in apart from 17 which, if it hits returns a nice $144. Sadly, as my roulette screenshot shows, I only hit 2 $9 winners in a string of 10 spins - $90 gone for a measly $18 return!

Apart from being mad at the lack of good spins, the actual game play was again good, with smooth graphics making the roulette experience pretty lifelike. Subtle sound effects went further in enhancing this experience.

At this point I really was feeling pretty pathetic, with my bankroll slashed to around $25. I desperately needed to recoup some money so decided to try the risky move of playing some slots. Slots are not a great bet and do take money when not paying. However, as jackpot winners will testify a win in the thousands for a relatively small bet definitely feels good!

So, I went for the Red, White and Win progressive slot which at the time of playing was showing a lovely $251,000 jackpot up for grabs for the $2.50 required bet. This game soon cheered me up, not only because of the attractive graphics but because it paid out nicely! No jackpots, but a couple of $50 winners in quick succession lifted my bankroll up to a decent amount.

As many readers of my online casino reviews will know, slots are not normally a favorite of mine. However, since Red, White and Win had been so generous to me, I decided to see what other slots there were for me to play!

The slot selection at Silver Dollar Casino is not huge, but there are a decent number of slots available and the game play for each is generally good. I have found before that some casinos are disappointing in their slot game play, but Silver Dollar appear to have worked hard to maintain a good quality in their games.

I had fun playing a number of Silver Dollar's slots and was pleased to see that the minimum bet amount for some slots was incredibly low - for example, just $0.05 can pay for a spin on the unique-to-the-casino Silver Dollar Slot. The Win, Place or Show progressive also was a fun game to play - again I think it was the use of bright graphics that made this game appealing.

Some more unusual slots are also available at Silver Dollar, such as the 'Triple Slot' selection where a player can effectively play a number of different machines in one pull. I played the King Tut's three-machine slot, but unfortunately was unable to replicate the luck I had experienced at the start of my slot play!

As such, I took my bankroll (which was now back to around $100) to the Video Poker selection at Silver Dollar Casino. Again, not a huge selection of VP games are available at this casino, but a selection that should be big enough to satisfy most players.

Many of the Video Poker games are also available in multi-hand varieties. I had great fun playing 100-hand Deuces Wild! One nice thing with the multi-hand games was the magnifying glass feature, which can be used to view any hand close up!

In terms of luck I didn't really do well, and my bankroll soon started heading downwards, particularly when I started to make some big bets on the multi-hand games. And so, with my bankroll dwindling I headed back to where I had begun by playing some of the untested table games. Stud Poker and Let it Ride were definitely good fun, and a few times I got some good winners that took me back up to near $100.

Sadly my greed took over, and while I had a good hour or so of playing with my deposit and later the bonus money, I wasn't able to cash in at this casino. However, if I did have money to cash-in, Silver Dollar state that withdrawals are processed within a day or two of cashing-in. This is perfectly acceptable and should satisfy the majority of players.

Finally, I tested the customer support. This casino offers a toll-free telephone number for American players, and an 'international' number for everybody else. However, I was disappointed that non-US players would have to pay for expensive calls to contact support. There is an email form available on the website, but it would have nice to have been provided with simple email addresses for support. However, despite these criticisms I did complete the web form and received a response within about 12 hours, which is reasonable. I later also discovered a live chat facility which again improved the impression I got about this important casino feature.

In conclusion, I would say that Silver Dollar is a reasonably good casino. The Odds On/Vegas Technology software is of a fairly high standard and the game selection is generally good. Similarly, the graphics used in the games is on the whole good.

Finally, the casino is supported by effective customer support and banking processes. I just felt that there was nothing that really blew me away at this casino. However, for a change to the 'usual', Silver Dollar Casino is reputable and should appeal to the majority of online casino players.

Silver Dollar Casino Strong Points:
  • Games available on CD and in a Flash version
  • Attractive graphics used in the majority of games
  • Low betting limits attractive to small bettors
  • Slots are of a relatively high quality
Things Silver Dollar Casino Could Improve:
  • Customer support could be more internationally-focused
  • The sign-up bonus has game restrictions attached, among others placing blackjack, video poker and roulette bets does not count in regards to fulfilling the minimum wagering requirements for the "free cash" sign-up promotion.
  • Silver Dollar's "About Us" page should in my opinion tell more about who operates the casino.
